Rob Hulse played a major part in WBA's promotion from the Championship in 2003-04 season. He scored 13 times in an injury hit season. However, after Megson's managerial departure at the start of the 2004-05 Premiership season he had little opportunity under new manager Bryan Robson to show his talents. Blackwell rescued him from the reserves with a season-long loan to Leeds to partner David Healy up front.

To say Rob's debut was spectacular is an understatement! Healy put Leeds 1-0 at home against high-flyers Reading when Rob came along in the second half to steal the show with two individual goals struck from outside the box. He was booked in Leeds' abysmal defeat at Wigan the following week but returned to goal scoring form in his third match for the Whites, this time against West Ham United, with a another brilliant goal; a full volley after great work from Aaron Lennon.
