Healy's Departure to Merseyside?

19th Jan, 2006 :: by Veritas

Northern Ireland international David Healy is interesting fellow celt and Everton manager David Moyes. Cash-strapped Everton, (why are all the teams who are interested in Leeds players broke?), have an unexpected £2 million in the kitty following the surprise move yesterday of Marcus Bent to Charlton Athletic. There's no doubt Healy can cut it at the top-level, witness his goal against England last September and the number of Premiership clubs being linked to him.

But is he available for Everton to pursue? Kevin Blackwell's favoured frontline is currently Richard Cresswell and Robbie Blake, with Healy either being played out of position or sharing the subs bench with Rob Hulse. Additionally, Michael Ricketts has unexpectedly returned from Cardiff City where he was wanted permanently (but they have no money for his wages - "cash-strapped again!" Mind you with that buffoon, Peter 'Satan' Ridsdale, in charge name a Leeds Utd fan who is surprised at this!

Although all this would seem to indicate availability, especially if he can make £1.4 million profit for the club, Blackwell is keen to extend his options not limit them. Ricketts can hardly be considered an adequate replacement for Healy who has scored 12 times is 29 appearances this season. Moreover, all his four strikers have had periods out through injury this season and he cannot risk going into the play-offs with just three first choice strikers. Remember, Blackwell learnt his trade under Neil Warnock and Neil always trys to keep a large stable of strikers available to counter injuries, loss of form, etc.

Finally, as Blackwell wants to build up his squad he'd be happier with a player swop deal than just cash. After all, once someone knows you've just got money all the prices go up! It is also difficult to see which Everton player would want to make the trip to Elland Road and the Championship. If David Healy is about to move then it is probably elsewhere than Goodison Park.
