Leeds United's Angolan-born defender, Rui Marques has had an up-and-down week as these thing go. Although brought up in Portugal rather than the former Portuguese African colony of Angola, Rui was looking forward to a spell in Egypt with the Angolan national team and glory in the now controversial African Nations Cup. Unlike some Premiership clubs, Leeds cannot say the loss of Rui to the ANC would have badly affected their season as he has barely pulled on the white shirt since signing in the summer.
Sadly for Rui the ANC didn't turn out to be quite the adventure for which he had been hoping as a mix-up over residency requirements prevented him playing and he had to return to the ancient glories of Leeds rather than the Nile Valley. Still, Rui is clearly not one to let things get him down as he promptly turned out for the Stiffs, away at Bolton, alongside Danny Pugh, Jermaine Wright etc. and popped up to score the only goal of the game. What have the Angolans missed out on?
