In the 88th minute of Manchester Utd's 0-1 defeat by Liverpool in this lunchtime's FA Cup tie, Alan Smith suffered a freak accidental injury.
As a substitute he had hardly been on the pitch for any length of time. As usual, he enthusiastically threw himself in front of a Liverpool shot. He blocked the shot with his right leg but seemed to land awkwardly on his left ankle/leg. He immediately signalled for assistance. Alan was carried off the pitch, after five minutes of on-field treatment, with the leg in an inflated protective sleeve.
Peter Crouch scored the headed goal in the 19th minute that gave Liverpool their first win in 85 years in the FA Cup over Manchester United. Thus ends perhaps one of the most unbelievable records in English football!
As expected Gary Neville was booed throughout the game following his badge-kissing antics in the previous game between the clubs.
