Potentially, one of the summer's most exciting transfers into Leeds United was that of former Nottingham Forest
, Aston Villa
winger Steve Stone
on a free transfer from Portsmouth
. For once the football transfer market seemed to have worked in our favour. However, Stone ruptured his Achilles during pre-season training not long after arriving at Elland Road.
Steve underwent an operation but the area became infected which prevented the torn Achilles tendon from healing, necessitating a second operation. Despite initial progress it became clear that Stone's career was in jeopardy when in December 2005 it was announced that he would undergo a third and final operation.
It appears today that the third operation has been a success and that 34-year old Stone's career has not been prematurely ended. Indeed, there are signs that he may even make a belated debut in what we hope is Leeds United's last Championship campaign!
