Tonight, Sheffield United dropped two points in a 0-0 draw with Crewe Alexandra at a snowy Bramall Lane. It was lowly Crewe's first away clean sheet of the season!
This top and bottom of the Championship clash is just the sort in which Leeds have specialised in dropping crucial points during the last two seasons (no one mention Brighton)!
Still, this further stumble by the Blades will give Leeds a tremendous incentive when they play Crystal Palace in a top-of-the-table clash tomorrow.
On a bitter night Sheff United won the moral victory with eight shots on target to Crewe's solitary effort. Indeed in an eventful 87th minute Ade Akinbiyi had a strong penalty appeal turned down and then saw Kenny Lunt clear his effort off the line from the resulting corner!
Sadly for Neil Warnock's promtion hopes, moral victories don't give you three points. In fact, Sheffield United have now won only one of their last four home games. A fact which helped prompt the home crowd to boo the team off the pitch at the end.
Things get worse for Warnock as Leigh Bromby was taken off with a serious knee injury and Warnock let his mouth run off with him in the after match interview in which he questioned the referee's competence following his failure to give the penalty shout. As the players were coming off the pitch Warnock seemed to be berating Akinbiyi for not going down under the challenge from Crewe's Madjid Bougherra!
The Blunts are now nine points ahead of Leeds United but the Elland Road boys have two games in hand on them and have the better current form. Moreover, Ade Boothroyd's Watford are ready to leap-frog the ailing Sheffield United; Watford's current form is second only to that of Reading FC!
Neil Warnock had better watch out - the hunt is on!!
