United blow it at the death: McAllister fuming

17 March 2008 :: by Adders

Gary McAllister was left fuming at the end of the game in which his side threw away a 2-0 lead away from home against the division's whipping boys, Port Vale.

"I've got four experienced guys playing at the back in this match and they've got to defend better," McAllister told BBC Radio Leeds. "To lose a goal right at the last kick of the game isn't good enough."

Luke Rodger's stoppage-time equaliser saw Leeds United slump to mid-table mediocrity.

The match started well for United with talismanic defender Rui Marques giving them the lead just before half-time. McAllister was delighted to see his controversial loan signing Dougie Freedman double their lead in the 41st minute.

However, it was Vale who responded in the second half, firstly, with a hotly disputed penalty penalty from Paul Harsley, after Andrew Hughes handled the ball, and then to the dismay of McAllister, Danny Whitaker equalised from close range just two minutes later.

"I've looked back at it and the Port Vale players aren't asking for a penalty," commented McAllister. "You can tell from their reaction that it was not handball. I didn't think we reacted well to the bad decision - for 10 or 15 minutes after that it was still affecting us, and you can't let that happen. You've been dealt a bad blow but you get on with it, and we conceded another soft goal very close to it."

McAllister signed Dougie Freedman from Palace to do a job and when the Scot headed Leeds 3-2 ahead in the 86th minute he must have felt vindicated, however, Luke Rodger's goal wiped the smile from his face and sent the majority of the 7,908 crowd delirious with joy with a superb comeback for the side anchored at the foot of League One.

United's current form means that even if they get the 15 points returned in April there is now a huge doubt whether or not that they could hold onto even a play-off place. Nonetheless, McAllister would not admit to those thoughts publicly, instead he said, "We really need to have the sort of mentality the club probably had at the start of the season when everyone was writing them off then. People are maybe looking and saying 'their push is maybe fading a little bit', but I can assure we'll be working extremely hard to get ourselves back in there."

Perhaps McAllister may regret allowing Matty Heath to leave Leeds last week?
