Leeds fans fight back - make the Football League pay!

3 August 2007 :: by Chris Hudson

So Leeds United 2007 will have the golden share of Leeds United transferred to them (oh, we are so grateful, Sire!) in return for accepting a 15 point penalty! Ouch! So that's 25 points deducted in total for going bankrupt after years of paying off footballing debts due to the arcane rules of the Football League that insists that the very work-shy layabouts that get a football club into trouble are guaranteed payment in full!

Presumably, Boston United will also face a 15 point penalty as they really took the piss by going into administration ten minutes before the end of their last game of the season. After all, Mawhinney would not want to be seen as an inflexible, petulant, control-freak carrying out a vendetta against Leeds United and ken Bates by applying harsher penalties to one club than another, meaningless demands for documentation, procrastination over vital meetings and finally proposing ridiculous and legally impossible options to Leeds, until Leeds have to build a team and begin their pre-season with just eight days to go? Why didn't Lord Mawhinney and the League just have the balls to come out and say, "We want to relegate you to League Two because you went into administration and madeus look silly, oh and you're Leeds United'. But perhaps he feels better with the dagger in the back approach as favoured by so many British politicians over the years.

No doubt the Board of the Football League are feeling pleased with themselves as 'they've shown Ken Bates who's boss'. Of course, while the Football League, are obsessed with playing a game of 'whose dick is the biggest', the ones paying the real price are the Leeds United fans themselves. Another aimless season meandering the forgotten backwaters of the Football League watching a cobbled-together team play under a manager and a Chairman who are as popular as turds in a swimming pool. What is the point? Did Mawhinney ever consider the fans when he was comparing dick sizes with Bates? Did he wonder why any Leeds fan would fork out over £500 to see a team almost certainly be relegated not because of its performances on the pitch but rather because of political arm wrestling off it? Mawhinney and the Football League should have punished those that they perceived as the perpetrators of whatever terrible crime they have in their heads that is worth a 15 point deduction - not the fans who have stuck by their team despite those who actually caused the terrible mess walking away scott-free and now running another football club. Frankly, the Leeds fans should tell Mawhinney to shove it! See you in a year - we're keeping our money in our pockets. I'd like to see Mawhinney bleat on about rising Football League attendances again when the League One figures go down the toilet as Leeds fans refuse to pay out to watch a team already condemned. Why didn't the Football League just state that Leeds United shall play each game with ten men? At least the unfairness of the Football League would be evident on the pitch, at every game.

As Leeds fans are to be made to watch the engineered demise of their team by a 'death by 15 point deductions', Bates should immediately slash Elland Road prices - flat rate admission £5, and Leeds United to announce the return of all away ticket allocations in their entirety. Leeds United will play away in front of no Leeds fans as a protest at the aimlessness of the season. Meanwhile, Leeds fans can get together in huge numbers at Elland Road and enjoy the atmosphere of a packed house, at a bargain price and display, vocally, their displeasure at the Football League and the brain-dead moron who thought up a 25 point penalty. Of course such action would take a brave, buccaneering, far-seeing Chairman who is just enough of a bastard to want to wave his tadger in Mawhinney's face - metaphorically, of course, and make a protest that the Football League will never forget. Otherwise it is the usual case of the footballing authorities saying to Leeds fans once again - "bend over, this is going to hurt you a lot more that it hurts me... pass me the vaseline.. and then pass me your wallet"

Come on Leeds fans - do something - do anything, just don't accept this with the usual 'we'll get behind the team' etc - it won't work this time. You've seen the pre-season we've had, the players we've lost. Do you know how many teams avoid relegation with just a ten point penalty? I live in Scarborough and I spent a season watching the former Football League club struggle manfully against such a penalty - the result - relegation for the second season running causing the permanent closing of a 128-year club with magnificent traditions. A club, that I might add still owned its own ground, unlike Leeds United!

You may not be able to change the deduction but don't just hand over your money to them. Support Leeds United at Elland Road and refuse to spend a penny at away grounds or even the businesses in their towns if you must go. Stand up and be counted for Leeds United - Marching on together - to Elland Road and fuck the rest and fuck the Football League!!
