Leeds United suffered their first defeat of the season, in either League or Cup, against Portsmouth this evening. The 2nd round Carling Cup tie ended 3-0 to Pompey. Two late goals for Pompey, by Pamarot (powerful header) and former Preston striker Nugent (close range side foot),
added respectability to the scoreline for Portsmouth who went ahead late in the first half through Noe Pamarot's lucky first strike.
Paramot's first goal was really a deflection of a strike by Pedro Mendes.
As always Tresor Kandol and Jermaine Beckford both went close for Leeds but this time couldn't apply the killer touch.
The best chance for Leeds fell to David Prutton but the former Saint couldn't punish his former derby rivals. The match was probably most noteworthy for Leeds Utd fans as it marked the debut for Tomi Ameobi. Last season's Carling Cup saw the debut of Jonny Howson (who also started tonight) so Leeds fans will be hoping it is a sign that Ameobi will prove as good a discovery as Jonny Howson!
As they say, Dennis Wise and his Leeds squad can now concentrate on the League!
