Sweeney leaves Leeds Utd for Grimsby

Jul-4-2009 By Autolycus

As expected, Grimsby Town have completed the signing of Scottish midfielder Peter Sweeney, following his release by Leeds United.

The 24 year-old midfielder finished the 2008-09 season on loan with Grimsby and has now signed a 2 year contract.

Glasgow-born Sweeney began his football career as a trainee with Millwall and played in the 2004 FA Cup final.

In July 2005 he went to play for Stoke City, enjoying short loan spells at Yeovil Town and Walsall.

He was signed for Leeds United by Dennis Wise in January 2008, on a free transfer from Stoke but made only nine appearances in a Leeds Utd shirt in eighteen months. He made eight appearances on loan to The Mariners during a two moth loan spell from March to May 2009.

Leeds United have signed 32 year-old goalkeeper Shane Higgs on a one-year contract.

Oxford-born Higgs spent ten years between the sticks at Cheltenham but last season was loaned out to Championship side Wolves from the end of November 2008 until May 2009.

Leeds United manager Simon Grayson said of the signing, on the official website, “I’m glad we’ve signed Shane because he will provide increased competition for places. He is very experienced and he ended last season at Wolves, who held him in very high regard.”

Higgs began his career in 1995 at Bristol Rovers and after three years with the Pirates he left for a single season at non-league Worcester City.

He joined Cheltenham Town in June 1999 when The Robins were celebrating their promotion from the Football Conference to League Two.

Shane went on to make 275 appearances in all competitions for the Gloucestershire club.
