Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink retires

Sep-16-2008 By Badalemente

Former Leeds United striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, 36, has retired from professional football.

He was a Dutch international, scoring nine goals and gaining 23 caps for The Netherlands.

He was signed by Leeds manager George Graham, for just £2m, and like his manager eventually left the club under a cloud.

In the case of Hasselbaink, having scored 34 goals in 69 games for the Whites he made it clear that he wanted to leave despite the best efforts of the club to keep him. He was sold for £12m to Athletico Madrid.

Hasselbaink claimed later that he hadn’t wanted to leave Elland Road. This is disputed by the, then, Leeds United supremo, Peter ‘Dreamer’ Ridsdale.

After leaving Athletico Madrid for Chelsea he went on to play for Middlesbrough, Charlton Athletic and, ironically, under Peter Ridsdale again, this time at Cardiff City.
