Leeds United’s 2011-12 pre-season fixtures
Here’s the list of pre-season friendlies so far:
Saturday July 16th 2011 – Motherwell v Leeds United (3pm)
Tuesday July 19th 2011 – Rochdale v Leeds United (7.45pm)
Saturday July 23rd 2011 – Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds United (1pm)
Sunday July 31st 2011 – Leeds United v Newcastle United (2pm)
There will be another friendly between the clashes with Wednesday and the the Toon.
Although a short list, it is interesting. Motherwell, being a Scottish Premier League team will provide an early test for the squad.
It will be good to pay a visit to Hillsborough and renew rivalries with fellow Tykes, Sheffield Wednesday now in League One. Hopefullly the early kick off and some summer sunshine will mean an intense but enjoyable derby both on and off the pitch.
The final friendly will be against our old foe, Newcastle United. The game against the Premier League Barcodes used to be the traditional Boxing Day game back in the day. Their release of Alan Smith will remove one obstacle to the enjoyment of the game for many older Leeds Utd fans. I always enjoy this fixture as it is seen as a bit of a derby and plenty of noisy Toon support will turn up too, but without all the bitter hysteria usually generated by fans of fellow Yorkshire clubs every time they meet Leeds. Sadly, the bile displayed by those fans is pathetically OTT and creates an unhealthy atmosphere, especially for a sport that tries to sell itself as an experience for all the family.
